I have been unemployed since August 08, how much tax should i be claming back from the Inland Revenue?

I need to send off a tax rebate to the inland revenue, but am not sure how many months i should be claiming back? Also would i be entitled to the £50 that the goverment handed out in peoples paychecks last september from the goverment during the recession? Do i just need to send my p45 and p60 off to them? or could i go to my local tax office? I have been living off my savings and my partners income. Any Tax consultants who could answer this would be of a great help?

  1. Speak to the tax office. Best way is to file a self assessment online.
  2. It is not likely that you will have to do a Tax Return for this unless you have been self-employed, or had a lot of untaxed income like interest. Don't get involved with self-assessment if you haven't got to! The British tax year goes from 6th April to 5th April. Yes, I would send any documentation you have like forms P60 or P45. Both are legal documents which show your pay and tax deducted. It cuts down the time HMRC have to spend making enquiries. Payslips aren't acceptable for repayment purposes. Tax office will also need to know your employment history for the year 06/04/08 to 05/04/09, even periods of "not working". When a refund is calculated at the end of the tax year, it is based on the earnings for that year. So whether or not you get that £50 depends on your total earnings. Only people who had paid enough tax under the lower code number got the refund when it was uprated. Not everyone got it. In an end-of-year calculation, the higher personal allowance of £6035 will be used. You can go to your local enquiry centre, but they can't do your refund there. They will have to pass claim on to your main office. Ask for "lump-sum" repayment, otherwise they may try to do it through this year's code number. Then a computerised cheque, which will be issued from a HMRC processing centre will be sent to you.
